Digital abacus and mental calculation
A comparison of representations and teaching possibilities—not a ranking. Practical merits and limitations below are our design analysis.
How it works
Digital tools can display beads and practise procedures. SoroTouch combines tablet interaction and mental-abacus training; features and results belong to its specific programme.
Specific programme + participants + outcome ≠ proof for every abacus
Practical merits
A screen can provide repeatable practice and feedback without physical loose parts. It can expose a numerical reading and relate it to a representation.
Limitations and teaching needs
A screen does not reproduce wood texture, resistance or physical reach. Feedback can reveal answers prematurely; device access and narration need consideration.
What the evidence establishes
A six-month randomized SoroTouch study involved 20 adults aged 42–79. It found no improvement in total cognition, with differences on selected tasks. Small adult findings must not be promoted as proof for children or this website.
How this relates to The Ultimate Abacus
TUA’s explorer is a conceptual place-value simulation. It is not SoroTouch, a speed-training course or validation of the full physical mechanism. Its feedback aims to explain representations.
What can a simulation clarify, and what must be tested on the physical frame?
